Overview

Introduction

Ocicure -IV Injection is a medicine that reduces the amount of acid produced in your stomach. It is used for treating acid-related diseases of the stomach and intestine such as heartburn, acid reflux, indigestion, peptic ulcer disease, and some other stomach conditions associated with excessive acid production.

Ocicure -IV Injection is also used to prevent stress ulcers in seriously ill patients and is administered before anesthetic medication to help prevent aspiration-related complications. It belongs to a class of medicines known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). This medicine is administered into a vein by a healthcare professional and will only be given to you if your doctor thinks that an injection is more suitable for you at the moment than a tablet. The dose will depend on your underlying condition and how you respond to the medicine. Your doctor will decide the duration of treatment but you should keep on taking it as prescribed, even if your symptoms disappear quickly. You can increase the efficiency of the treatment by eating smaller meals more often and avoiding caffeinated drinks (like tea and coffee), and spicy or fatty foods.

The most common side effects observed with this medicine include nausea, headache, flatulence, diarrhea, stomach pain, and injection site reactions (pain, swelling, redness). These symptoms are generally mild but if they bother you or do not go away, consult your doctor. Long-term use of this medicine may lead to an increased risk of side effects. For instance, using this medicine for more than 1 year may increase your risk for bone fractures, especially with higher doses. Talk to your doctor about ways to prevent bone loss (osteoporosis), like taking calcium and vitamin D supplements.

Ocicure -IV Injection is not suitable for some people. Before taking this medicine, you need to tell your doctor if you have severe liver problems, or have ever had an allergic reaction to similar medicines in the past or suffer from bone loss (osteoporosis).
Many other medicines may affect, or be affected by, this medicine so let your doctor know about all other medicines you are taking, to make sure it is safe. This is particularly important if you are taking medicines for HIV, fungal infections, tuberculosis, epilepsy (fits), or some types of blood thinners.

Pregnant or breastfeeding women should also consult their doctor before taking it. Avoid drinking alcohol as it makes your stomach produce excessive acid and can worsen your symptoms. Do not drive or use machinery or tools, if this medicine makes you feel dizzy or sleepy.

Uses of Ocicure Injection

Benefits of Ocicure Injection

In Heartburn

Heartburn and acid reflux happens when a muscle above your stomach relaxes too much and allows stomach contents and acid to come back up into your esophagus and mouth. Ocicure -IV Injection belongs to a group of medicines called proton pump inhibitors. It reduces the amount of acid your stomach makes and relieves the pain associated with heartburn and acid reflux. You can increase the efficiency of the medicine by making certain lifestyle changes. These include avoiding foods that trigger the symptoms, eating smaller more frequent meals, losing weight if you are overweight.

In Gastroesophageal reflux disease (Acid reflux)

GERD is a chronic (long-term) condition which is like having heartburn consistently rather than just occasionally. It happens because a muscle above your stomach relaxes too much and allows stomach contents to come back up into your esophagus and mouth. Ocicure -IV Injection belongs to a group of medicines called proton pump inhibitors. It reduces the amount of acid your stomach makes and relieves the pain associated with heartburn and acid reflux. You should take it exactly as it is prescribed for it to be effective.

Some simple lifestyle changes can help reduce the symptoms of GERD. Think about what foods trigger heartburn and try to avoid them; eat smaller more frequent meals; try to lose weight if you are overweight and try to find ways to relax. Do not eat within 3-4 hours of going to bed.

In Peptic ulcer disease

Ocicure -IV Injection belongs to a group of medicines called proton pump inhibitors. It reduces the amount of acid your stomach makes which prevents further damage to the ulcer as it heals naturally. You may be given other medicines along with this medicine depending on what caused the ulcer. It is given as an injection by your doctor or healthcare provider.

FAQs

Q. Can I take Ocicure with domperidone?

Ocicure can be safely taken with domperidone as no harmful effects have been reported clinically. A fixed-dose combination of these two medicines is also available. Domperidone works by increasing the gut motility and Ocicure decreases the acid production in the stomach. So, this combination is very effective in the treatment of reflux esophagitis associated with acidity, heartburn, intestinal and stomach ulcers.

Q. What should I know before taking Ocicure?

You should not take it if you are taking a medicine containing nelfinavir (used for HIV infection). Let your doctor know if you are suffering from any liver problems, persistent diarrhea or vomiting, black stools (blood-stained stools), unusual weight loss, trouble swallowing, stomach pain or indigestion. Tell your doctor about all the other medicines you are taking because they may affect, or be affected by, this medicine. Inform your doctor if you have or ever had an allergic skin reaction with Ocicure. This medicine should not be given to children who are less than 1 year of age or whose body weight is less than 10 kgs. Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers should consult their doctor before taking Ocicure to avoid harmful effects on the baby.

Q. Can Ocicure cause diarrhea?

Yes, Ocicure may cause diarrhea as a side effect in some people. This is usually not bothersome, but if you experience persistent watery stools that do not go away, along with stomach cramps and fever, get medical help immediately. These symptoms are most likely because of the overgrowth of harmful bacteria called C. difficile and the diarrhea is known as Clostridium difficile–associated diarrhea (CDAD). Use of Ocicure lowers the natural stomach acid which normally helps to kill bacteria and this can cause this uncontrollable diarrhea associated with stomach cramps and fever.

Q. Can Ocicure be used in cardiac patients?

Patients with cardiac disease can take Ocicure as prescribed by the doctor. However, Ocicure can interact with certain drugs (e.g clopidogrel, digoxin) which might be used by a patient with an underlying cardiac disease. Patients taking Ocicure and digoxin may need to be monitored for digoxin toxicity. Ocicure decreases the activation of clopidogrel, thus reducing its effects. Patients taking these medicines together need to be monitored closely by a doctor.

Q. Can I take antacids along with Ocicure?

Yes, you can take antacids along with Ocicure. Take it 2 hours before or after you take Ocicure.

Q. Is Ocicure safe to use?

Yes, Ocicure is relatively safe to use. Most of the people who take Ocicure do not get a side effect. It is advised to be taken as directed by the doctor for maximum benefit.

Q. Can Ocicure cause weight gain?

Weight gain is reported in less than 1% of the patients taking Ocicure but the exact cause is unknown. One possible explanation is higher food intake once the reflux symptoms are relieved. Lifestyle modifications such as proper diet and exercise can help to prevent weight gain.

Q. Can Ocicure cause calcium deficiency and osteoporosis?

Ocicure can cause osteoporosis (thinning of bones) as it decreases the calcium absorption leading to calcium deficiency. This leads to an increased risk of bone fractures on long-term use, like hip, wrist or spine fractures. Inform your doctor if you have osteoporosis or if you are taking corticosteroids (these can increase the risk of osteoporosis) before starting your therapy. Consult your doctor on ways to prevent this. Your doctor may advise you calcium or vitamin D supplements to reduce the risk.

Q. Does Ocicure cause vitamin deficiencies?

Ocicure may cause vitamin B12 and vitamin C deficiency. When taken orally, vitamin B12 requires an acidic environment for its absorption from the stomach while Ocicure causes a decrease in the gastric acid secretion. You may need to take vitamin B12 supplements along with it. The clinical significance of the decrease in vitamin C levels is not known, so vitamin C supplementation is not recommended.

Q. Can I take alcohol with Ocicure?

No, alcohol intake is not advised with Ocicure. Alcohol itself does not affect the working of Ocicure, but it can increase the acid production. This may further cause worsening of your symptoms.
