How to cope with side effects?

The occurrence of side effects varies from person to person. The following are a few ways of dealing with some of the common side effects. However, consult your doctor if these persist.

  • Coping with Increased risk of infection
If you have a low level of white blood cells, you are more likely to get infections. There are several ways to reduce your chances of catching or spreading an infection. Avoid unnecessary exposure to germs when you can. Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly with soap or use a sanitiser. Avoid crowds and avoid contact with people who are ill or have infections. Use disposable tissues for coughs and sneezes. Consider using an appropriate face mask. Do not share personal items like cutlery, glasses, towels or toothbrushes with others. Get enough rest and eat a well balanced healthy diet.
  • Coping with Weight gain
Try to eat a healthy balanced diet without increasing your portion sizes. Avoid processed meat or poultry and seafood. Eat small, frequent meals and eat slowly. Do not snack on foods that contain a lot of calories such as crisps, cakes, biscuits and sweets. If you feel hungry between meals, eat fruits and vegetables which have low calories. Avoid reaching for a sugary drink if you feel stressed. Fasting once a week can be an effective way to lose weight. Make sure you get enough sleep. With proper diet and lifestyle changes, you might not gain any weight or may gain only a small amount. Even then if it bothers you, ask your doctor if there are any alternative medicines that do not have this side effect.
  • Coping with Mood changes and Behavioural changes
If you feel this medicine is causing mood or behavior changes, speak to your doctor as you may need a change of medicine. There are also some things you can do yourself. Eat well, do relaxation or deep breathing exercises and practice regular exercise that you enjoy, such as walking, swimming or yoga. Try to avoid caffeine, alcohol and sugar as these can all cause mood swings or make them worse. A good night’s sleep can also help. It often helps to talk to a friend or family member even if you find this difficult. If it bothers you, consult with your doctor.
  • Coping with Upset stomach
Try taking your medicine with a meal or snack, or shortly after eating. It might help to eat smaller and more frequent meals, and to eat and drink slowly. Avoid foods which can irritate your stomach such as carbonated soft drinks, caffeine, fatty and spicy foods, mints and citrus fruits. Quit smoking and alcohol because they increase the symptoms. Do not eat for 3 or 4 hours before going to bed. Try raising the head of your bed at night or use extra pillows. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about medicines that may help, such as antacids, if your condition does not improve.

FAQs

Q. What is Meripred used for?

Meripred has anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressant properties. It is used to treat conditions like allergic conditions, anaphylaxis, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory skin diseases. It is also helpful in treating autoimmune diseases (these diseases happen when your body’s immune system attacks the body itself and causes damage) and certain eye disorders.

Q. How does Meripred work?

Meripred works by reducing the inflammation which helps in treating many illnesses caused due to active inflammation. In addition to that, it stops the autoimmune reactions which occur when your body's immune system attacks the body itself and causes damage.

Q. Is Meripred effective?

Meripred is effective if used in the dose and duration advised by your doctor. Do not stop taking it even if you see improvement in your condition. If you stop using Meripred too early, the symptoms may return or worsen.

Q. When will I feel better after taking Meripred?

Meripred effectively treats pain and inflammation. However, its effect may vary from person to person, depending on the condition you are being treated for and also your body weight. Your doctor will prescribe you Meripred in the dose that suits your requirement. Do not alter your dose thinking that a higher dose will provide faster relief. Rather, you may end up having undesirable side effects. Be patient, and follow your doctor’s instructions regarding the use of Meripred. Consult your doctor if you do not see improvement in your condition even after completing the full course of treatment.

Q. What if I forget to take a dose of Meripred?

If you forget a dose of Meripred, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next scheduled dose on the prescribed time. Do not double the dose to make up for the missed one as this may increase the chances of developing side effects.

Q. Is Meripred safe?

Meripred is safe if used in the dose and duration advised by your doctor. Take it exactly as directed and do not skip any dose. Follow your doctor's instructions carefully and let your doctor know if any of the side effects bother you.
