Lotensyl 10 Tablet


Introduction of Lotensyl Tablet

Lotensyl 10 Tablet is a medicine used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and angina (heart-related chest pain). It helps to lower high blood pressure, thus reducing the chances of future heart attack and stroke. This medicine should be used along with a proper diet, salt restriction, and regular exercise for best results. It should be taken regularly at a fixed time every day. This medicine should not be stopped abruptly. You may experience mild dizziness initially while taking this medicine, which improves with time. Swelling of the ankle may occur in some patients as a common side effect.

How to use Lotensyl Tablet

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Lotensyl 10 Tablet may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.

How Lotensyl Tablet works

Lotensyl 10 Tablet is a calcium channel blocker. It works by blocking the calcium from going into muscles of the heart and blood vessels. The muscles require calcium to perform contraction. In absence of calcium, the muscles relax and this lowers your blood pressure, making it easier for your heart to pump blood around your body.

Lotensyl 10 Tablet may be unsafe to use during pregnancy.
Animal studies have shown adverse effects on the fetus, however, there are limited human studies. The benefits from use in pregnant women may be acceptable despite the risk. Please consult your doctor.

Lotensyl 10 Tablet does not usually affect your ability to drive.

Use of Lotensyl 10 Tablet is not recommended in patients with severe kidney disease.

What if you miss a dose of Lotensyl Tablet?

If you miss a dose of Lotensyl 10 Tablet, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

  • A sudden drop in your blood pressure may occur, especially when you first start taking Lotensyl 10 Tablet. To lower the chance of feeling dizzy or passing out, rise slowly if you have been sitting or lying down.
  • It can cause ankle or foot swelling. Raise your legs while you are sitting down. Talk to your doctor if it does not go away.
  • It may cause dizziness. Do not drive or perform activity require mental focus until you know how Lotensyl 10 Tablet affects you.

Q. Can I take ibuprofen with Lotensyl?

It is not known whether lercanidipine cause any drug reaction with ibuprofen, always consult your doctor before its use.

Q. How should Lotensyl be taken?

Swallow the entire Lotensyl tablet with a glass of water. Take Lotensyl on an empty stomach, at least 15 minutes before a meal. This is because fatty food can increase the amount of Lotensyl your body takes in and make you more likely to have side effects.

Q. How long does it take Lotensyl to show its effect?

Lotensyl starts working on the day you start taking it but it may take 2 weeks to notice the full benefits of Lotensyl. Since there are usually no symptoms of hypertension, you may not notice any difference unless you get your blood pressure checked.

Q. It has been six months since I started taking Lotensyl and my blood pressure is under control. Can I stop taking it now?

No, continue taking Lotensyl even if you feel better. Stopping Lotensyl suddenly may cause your blood pressure to increase and your chances of stroke or heart attack may rise. Usually once you start taking any medicine for controlling blood pressure, you have to continue taking it life long unless you cannot tolerate it.

Q. I have been told that I have to take Lotensyl for several years. Is it safe to take it for a long term?

Lotensyl is a blood pressure lowering medicine. These medicines work best when taken for a long time. Lotensyl is safe and well tolerated by most people and does not have any lasting toxicity when taken for a long time. For best results, take it exactly as advised by the doctor.

Q. Is it okay to take cyclosporine with Lotensyl?

No, you should not take cyclosporine with Lotensyl. The reason being, both the medicines interfere with each other’s working, thereby increasing the risk of getting the side effects of both medicines.

Q. My friend who is taking Lotensyl is not allowed to take grapefruit or grapefruit juice. Why?

Grapefruit and grapefruit juice should not be consumed while taking Lotensyl because it may increase the levels of Lotensyl. This can cause a dip in blood pressure, lightheadedness and your friend may even faint.

Q. Should I restrict alcohol while taking Lotensyl?

Yes, you should avoid taking alcohol while taking Lotensyl since your blood pressure may fall further. As a result, you may feel dizzy or develop a headache.

Q. My uncle had once taken excess of Lotensyl and had to be hospitalized. What can be the symptoms of excess of Lotensyl and what should be done?

Taking excess of Lotensyl may cause vomiting, sleepiness, heart attack, drastic fall in blood pressure resulting in fast heartbeat. It can even lead to unconsciousness. In a condition when the patient takes an overdose, emergency medical care is required and patient is monitored for 24 hours.
