Eszol 40mg Tablet

Overview

Introduction

Eszol 40mg Tablet is a medicine which reduces the amount of acid produced in your stomach. It is used to treat acid reflux, peptic ulcer disease, and other problems in your food pipe. It is also used to prevent and treat stomach ulcers.

You should take Eszol 40mg Tablet as your doctor advises. The dose will depend on what you are being treated for, but it should be the lowest dose for the shortest amount of time needed to treat your condition. Normally it should be swallowed whole about an hour before a meal and at the same time each day. It may take up to a few weeks to work properly but your doctor will tell you how long you need to be taking it for. You should keep on taking it as prescribed even if your symptoms disappear quickly. If you are taking this medicine for a long time, your doctor may carry out regular tests to check your levels of magnesium which can fall with this medicine.

Common side effects include headache, constipation or diarrhoea, stomach pain and feeling or being sick. These tend to be mild but talk to your doctor if they bother you or do not go away. The risk of side effects may increase the longer you take this medicine. Serious side effects are rare, but some need immediate medical attention. Ask your doctor what these are. You may be more likely to have a broken bone if you take it for a long time. It is best to avoid foods that seem to make your symptoms worse, such as rich, spicy and fatty foods. It also helps to cut down on caffeinated drinks, such as tea, coffee and cola, as well as alcohol.

Eszol 40mg Tablet is not suitable for some people. Before taking this medicine, you need to tell your doctor if you have severe liver problems, are taking medicines for HIV, have had an allergic reaction to similar medicines in the past or have osteoporosis. Alcohol does not interfere with the way Eszol 40mg Tablet works. However, drinking alcohol makes your stomach produce more acid than normal. This medicine can make you feel dizzy, sleepy, or affect your vision. If this happens, do not drive, cycle or use machinery or tools until you feel better. It is not usually recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Most side effects do not require any medical attention and disappear as your body adjusts to the medicine. Consult your doctor if they persist or if you’re worried about them

Common side effects of Eszol

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Dryness in mouth
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Constipation
  • Flatulence
  • Diarrhea

How to cope with side effects?

The occurrence of side effects varies from person to person. The following are a few ways of dealing with some of the common side effects. However, consult your doctor if these persist.

  • Coping with Headache
Make sure you rest and drink plenty of fluids. Rest in a quiet, dimly lit room. Do not sleep more than you normally would. Do not strain your eyes (for example by looking at a screen). Do not drink alcohol. Headaches are usually temporary and usually go away with time. But, if they last longer or get worse, ask your doctor to recommend a painkiller.
  • Coping with Dizziness
This is usually short-lived and should go away within a few days. If this happens, stop what you are doing and sit or lie down until you feel better. Lying still in a dark, quiet room may help reduce the spinning feeling. Sleep with your head slightly raised on two or more pillows. Get up slowly from a lying or sitting position. Get plenty of rest and try to relax as being anxious can make it worse. Try taking this medicine at bedtime to reduce the symptoms. Drinking plenty of water and ginger tea may also help. Avoid alcohol, caffeine and smoking as it will make you feel worse. Avoid driving or using tools or machinery until you feel better.
  • Coping with Dryness in mouth
Keep a drink available that you can sip through the day. Rinse your mouth with warm salted water and chew sugarless gum or hard candy. Try breathing through your nose more often than your mouth. Avoid caffeinated beverages, smoking and alcohol because they can make your condition worse. Use lip balm if your lips are also dry. Try to avoid foods that are acidic (like lemons), spicy, salty or sugary. If this side effect bothers you or does not go away, talk to your doctor about artificial saliva products or other suitable treatments.
  • Coping with Nausea
You can help yourself by eating small, frequent meals rather than large ones and drinking plenty of fluids. Eat slowly. Avoid fatty, fried, spicy and very sweet foods. Eat cold or slightly warm food if the smell of cooked or cooking food makes you feel sick. Get plenty of fresh air. You could also try chewing ginger or drinking ginger tea. Eat bananas to replace potassium in your blood which can drop if you are sick (vomit). Use oral rehydration salts to replace vitamins and minerals lost through being sick. There are some medicines that can help you stop from feeling sick. Speak to your doctor if your condition does not improve.
  • Coping with Abdominal pain
In most cases, this is mild enough to be treated at home. Try to rest and relax. Putting a heat pad or covered hot water bottle on your stomach may also help. Having a warm bath or shower can help you relax and relieve the pain. Drink plenty of clear fluids such as water and reduce your intake of coffee, tea, lemon juice or soda. Avoid alcohol and smoking as these can aggravate the pain. Eating slowly and having smaller and more frequent meals can also help. If the pain is severe, speak to your doctor. They may be able to guide you better.
  • Coping with Constipation
Try to eat foods which are high in fiber such as fresh fruits, vegetables and cereals to increase the bulk and consistency of bowel movements. Drink plenty of water or non-alcoholic drinks and stay hydrated to promote healthy digestion. Increasing physical activities such as walking, yoga and regular exercise can also be helpful. If your condition does not improve, you can ask your doctor to prescribe you laxative medicine.
  • Coping with Flatulence
Try eating small and frequent meals. Drink and chew your food slowly. Exercise regularly to improve how your body digests food. Try not to swallow too much air. This can happen when you talk and eat at the same time. Avoid drinking with a straw, chewing gum and smoking as these can also make you swallow air. Try to limit foods that are hard to digest or produce gas (such as fried and fatty foods, cheese, beans, cabbage, onion, whole grains and many others). Avoid drinking alcohol, carbonated soft drinks and fruit juices. If you wear dentures, make sure they fit properly. Some over-the-counter medicines can help. Talk to your doctor about possible medication if your condition does not improve.
  • Coping with Diarrhea
Keep up your intake of fluids and electrolytes (sugars and salts) to avoid getting dehydrated. Eat less fiber (avoid raw fruits, fruit juice and vegetables). Talk to your doctor about possible medication to manage diarrhea. Ask about reducing the dosage of your drug or other suitable treatments.

FAQs

Q. What is the best time to take Eszol?

Usually, Eszol is taken once a day, first thing in the morning. If you take Eszol twice a day, take 1 dose in the morning and 1 dose in the evening. The tablets should be swallowed whole (remember not be chewed or crushed) and taken at least 1 hour before a meal with some water.

Q. Can I take Eszol with domperidone?

Yes, Eszol can be safely taken with domperidone as no harmful effects have been reported clinically. A fixed-dose combination of these two medicines is also available. Domperidone works by increasing the gut motility and Eszol decreases the acid production in the stomach. So, this combination is very effective in the treatment of reflux esophagitis associated with acidity, heartburn, intestinal and stomach ulcers.

Q. Can I take antacids along with Eszol?

Yes, you can take antacids along with Eszol. Take it 2 hours before or after you take Eszol.

Q. Can I take Eszol for a long term?

Eszol is usually prescribed for short term use only. However, if need arises, such as for treating peptic ulcer disease and Zollinger Ellison syndrome (ZES), Eszol may be prescribed for a long term duration as well. Long term use may carry an increased risk for side effects and must be discussed with the doctor. Please use Eszol as advised by your doctor and under their supervision.

Q. What are the long term side effects of Eszol?

If Eszol is used for more than 3 months, certain long term side effects may be seen. The most important of these is low magnesium levels in your blood which may make you feel tired, confused, dizzy, shaky or dizzy. You may also have muscle twitches or irregular heartbeat. If the use is further prolonged for more than a year, you may have an increased risk of bone fractures, stomach infections and vitamin B12 deficiency. Vitamin B12 deficiency can make you anemic, as a result of which you may feel more tired, weak, or pale. Additionally you may have palpitations, shortness of breath, lightheadedness, indigestion, loss of appetite, flatulence (gas) or nerve problems such as numbness, tingling and problem in walking.

Q. Can I stop taking Eszol if I feel better?

If you have been taking Eszol for a long time, stopping it abruptly may lead to increased acid production, thereby worsening your symptoms. Therefore, you must discuss any dose changes or if you wish to come off Eszol.

Q. Can Eszol cause weight gain?

Weight gain is reported in less than 1% of the patients taking Eszol but the exact cause is unknown. One possible explanation is higher food intake once the reflux symptoms are relieved. Lifestyle modifications such as proper diet and exercise can help to prevent weight gain.

Q. Is Eszol safe to use?

Yes, Eszol is relatively safe to use. Most of the people who take Eszol do not get a side effect. It is advised to be taken as directed by the doctor for maximum benefit.

Q. Can I take Eszol with ranitidine?

Yes, Eszol can be taken with ranitidine. According to research reports, there are no significant interactions seen between Eszol and ranitidine. However, you must take them together only if prescribed by the doctor.

Q. Can I take alcohol with Eszol?

No, alcohol intake is not advised with Eszol. Alcohol itself does not affect the working of Eszol, but it can increase the acid production. This may further cause worsening of your symptoms
