How to use Altimef Tablet

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Altimef Tablet is to be taken with food.

How Altimef Tablet works

Altimef Tablet is an antiparasitic medication which treats malaria. It works by increasing the levels of haeme in the blood, a substance toxic to the malarial parasite. This kills the parasite and stops the infection from spreading.

Alcohol
Interaction with alcohol is unknown. Please consult your doctor.
Pregnancy
WEIGH RISKS VS BENEFITS
Altimef Tablet may be unsafe to use during pregnancy.
Animal studies have shown adverse effects on the fetus, however, there are limited human studies. The benefits from use in pregnant women may be acceptable despite the risk. Please consult your doctor.
Lactation
Altimef Tablet is probably safe to use during lactation. Limited human data suggests that the drug does not represent a significant risk to the baby.
Driving
Do not drive unless you are feeling well.
Altimef Tablet can cause dizziness, loss of balance and mental problems and this may affect your ability to drive.
Kidney
There is limited information available on the use of Altimef Tablet in patients with kidney disease. Please consult your doctor.
Liver
CAUTION
Altimef Tablet should be used with caution in patients with liver disease. Dose adjustment of Altimef Tablet may be needed. Please consult your doctor.
Use of Altimef Tablet is not recommended in patients with severe liver disease.

  • Seek immediate medical attention if you experience pain, burning, tingling, numbness in hands/feet and/or muscle weakness or problems in eyes or with vision after taking mefloquine.
  • Do not drive or operate machinery while using mefloquine as it may cause dizziness and visual disturbances.

Q. Is Altimef safe?

Yes. Altimef is safe if used at the prescribed doses for the prescribed duration as advised by your doctor

Q. Is Altimef safe for babies?

It is not recommended for use in babies below 3 months and weighing less than 5 kg

Q. Is mefloquine an antibiotic/ a quinolone/ does it contain sulphur or sulfa/ contain quinine?

No. Mefloquine is an antimalarial drug with activity against malaria causing parasites. It is a quinine antimalarial and does not contain sulphur/ sulfa or quinolone

Q. Is mefloquine the same as doxycycline/ chloroquine?

No. Mefloquine is not the same as doxycycline or chloroquine. All three drugs have different mechanism of action and indications

Q. How does Altimef work?

Altimef is an antimalarial drug. It works by killing the malaria causing parasite by destroying the parasites at a crucial stage of development (asexual intraerythocytic stage)

Q. What does Altimef treat?

Altimef is used in the prevention and treatment of malaria

Q. Does Altimef cause insomnia?

Yes. Insomnia (difficulty falling asleep) is a common side effect of Altimef treatment

Q. Is Altimef safe for G6PD deficiency?

Yes. Studies have indicated that Altimef is safe for use in glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency.
