Dandruff? These 5 Habits Could Be The Reason Why

Dandruff is one of the most common hair problems faced by both men and women. The causes vary from person to person, but it is usually a result of improper handling of hair and scalp. According to experts, the cause of dandruff is rapidly maturing and shedding of scalp cells precipitated by excessive oil secretion. There are other factors like fungal infections, improper diet and use of harsh chemicals. By making small changes in your lifestyle, you can get rid of dandruff effectively.

Here are some habits causing dandruff which you should give up for healthy hair:

1 . Not Brushing Your Hair Properly

Brushing your hair ensures that blood circulation in your scalp is maintained. Sweating causes the damp skin to accumulate on the surface giving rise to itchiness and irritation. When you brush your hair, you remove dead cells from your head. But brushes with sharp ends will cause swelling and reddish patches on your scalp. Use a paddle brush. Brushes that have balls on the ends are even milder.

2 . Leaving Oily Hair Unattended

Oiling your hair is a good habit as it strengthens the roots and encourages hair growth. But oil should not be left in the hair for long as yeast start to feed on to the excess oil and dead cells causing the skin to shed more frequently and flakes start to appear on the scalp.

3 . Using Harsh Shampoos

Certain chemicals in shampoos can lead to dry and irritable skin and precipitate itching and dandruff. Choose a mild herbal shampoo that is gentle on the hair and has a compatible pH balance

4 . Allowing Fungal Overgrowth

Dandruff may also be caused due to a fungus growth in your skin. Malassezia is a fungus that is found on everyone’s scalp. The fungus feeds and grows excessively when there is too much oil secretion and dirt accumulation on one’s scalp. People with oily scalp should wash their hair 3-4 times in a week. Sometimes an anti-fungal shampoo, prescribed by a doctor,  is required to get rid of the infection.

5 .  Using Styling Tools Too Often

Heat and chemicals make your hair weak and damage the scalp. Straightening, blow-drying, and perming or any kind of artificial heat can cause irreparable damage and precipitate dandruff.
