Islet Cell Antibody - 512

Islet cell antibodies (ICA) are autoantibodies produced by the immune system that target the islet cells in the pancreas, which contain insulin-producing beta cells. A specific target of these antibodies is ICA-512, also known as protein tyrosine phosphatase-like protein IA-2, a protein found in the beta cells. In type 1 diabetes, the immune system mistakenly attacks these cells, leading to insulin deficiency.

The Islet Cell Antibody - 512 test measures the levels of ICA autoantibodies in the blood. Elevated ICA-512 antibodies can often be detected years before clinical symptoms appear. This makes the test useful for identifying individuals at risk of developing type 1 diabetes.

The test is also valuable for monitoring disease progression in diagnosed patients, screening high-risk individuals with other autoimmune or genetic conditions, distinguishing type 1 diabetes from type 2 diabetes, and identifying other autoimmune disorders associated with elevated ICA-512 levels, such as autoimmune thyroid disease or celiac disease.
