The FBS & PPBS (Fasting & Postprandial Blood Sugar) test is a group of blood tests that measure fasting blood glucose (FBG) after an overnight fast of 8–12 hours and postprandial blood glucose (PPBG) 2 hours after starting the meal. Together, these tests show how your body processes glucose both before and after meals, helping to predict the risk of diabetes and prediabetes, and monitor diabetes treatment. These tests are commonly included in routine health checkups and diabetes screening tests.












Understanding FBS & PPBS (Fasting & Postprandial Blood Sugar)
Glucose is the body’s main source of energy and comes from the carbohydrates in the food we eat. After meals, carbohydrates are broken down into glucose, which enters the bloodstream and is used by the body’s cells. The pancreas secretes insulin in response to a glucose load, and it helps glucose to move inside the cells for utilization.
Diabetes is a chronic condition in which blood glucose (sugar) levels are higher than normal. It occurs when the body either does not produce enough insulin or cannot use insulin effectively, leading to a buildup of glucose in the blood. Early detection and treatment of diabetes are essential to prevent complications such as heart disease, kidney damage, and nerve damage.
An FBG (fasting blood glucose) test provides insights into your body’s baseline regulation of glucose after a period of no calorie intake (minimum 8 hrs), while PPBG (post-prandial blood glucose) determines how well your body manages the glucose spike after a meal. Both of them help to screen for diabetes and prediabetes. They are also useful in guiding treatment and lifestyle changes to maintain healthy blood glucose levels.
For the first sample (FBG), fast for at least 8–12 hours before the test. During this period, do not eat or drink anything except water. For the second sample (PPBG), have a regular, balanced meal (avoid foods high in sugar or refined carbohydrates), and provide the blood sample two hours after starting the meal.
Inform your doctor about all your medications, as some can affect the test results, potentially requiring dosage adjustments or temporary discontinuation. Always discuss your test results with your doctor, as ranges can vary by lab and individual health needs.
Note:
- You need to place the order only once for this test. Two sample collections will be scheduled. The first sample collection is for the Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS) sample, which will be collected at your scheduled time after the required fasting period. The second sample collection is for the Postprandial Blood Sugar (PPBS) sample and will be scheduled 2 hours after the first sample. Please have your meal after the first sample collection.

The FBS (Fasting Blood Sugar) test measures the glucose level in the body under overnight fasting conditions. Glucose is the primary energy source and is broken down through metabolism to produce energy. Hormones and enzymes produced by the liver and pancreas control this process. The hormone insulin, produced by the pancreas, regulates blood glucose levels. When these levels are high, such as after a meal, insulin is secreted to transport glucose into cells for energy production. Elevated fasting glucose levels may indicate a risk of developing prediabetes or diabetes. Diabetes is broadly classified into two main types. Type 1 diabetes occurs when the pancreas produces little or no insulin due to autoimmune destruction of insulin-producing cells. Type 2 diabetes develops when the body becomes resistant to insulin or when insulin production is insufficient to meet the body’s needs.
