Arsenic, EDTA Plasma

The Arsenic, EDTA Plasma is a blood test that measures the amount of arsenic in an individual’s plasma (liquid part of the blood). Arsenic is a type of heavy metal which enters the body by inhaling arsenic particles in the air, by drinking contaminated water or by skin contact. This test is done to detect potential arsenic toxicity or arsenic poisoning. This test can be done when there are symptoms suggestive of arsenic toxicity, like abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, cough, chest pain, shortness of breath, sore throat, abnormal heart rhythm, low blood pressure, and red and swollen skin. It is also done in individuals who have been exposed to arsenic through occupational hazards or are living in an area where water or soil is contaminated with arsenic. This test can measure long-term exposure to high levels of arsenic within six and 12 months. To prevent arsenic exposure, it's important to use clean water, avoid areas with high arsenic, and follow safety rules in workplaces that involve arsenic.

This test is done by a highly specialised Mass Spectrometric technique (ICP-MS) that can measure elements at trace levels in body fluids.
