Aliskiren is used either alone or in combination with other drugs for controlling blood pressure in patients who suffer from high blood pressure.

How it works

Aliskiren belongs to a class of medication called renin inhibitors. It prevents the release of substances which tighten the blood vessels and helping them relax, thereby reducing the blood pressure.

How it works

Hydrochlorothiazide belongs to class of medications called thiazide diuretics. It acts by eliminating the fluid and salts from the body. It works on the kidneys to produce more urine which removes extra water and certain salts from the body which in turn lowers blood pressure and swelling.

  • You should take aliskiren regularly, without stopping even if you feel well, to keep your high blood pressure under control.
  • You should avoid eating a high fat meal (fried/fast foods) when taking aliskiren with a meal.
  • You should not take aliskiren if you have diabetes and if you are taking medications like itraconazole, cyclosporine, angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) or angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors.
  • Inform the doctor if you have a history of heart related disorder, kidney disease or seizures (fits) or if you are on a low salt diet.
  • You may need to monitor your blood pressure often while on aliskiren therapy as it may cause very low blood pressure resulting in vomiting, diarrhea and light-headedness.
  • Aliskiren may cause dizzinesss. Avoid getting up too fast from a sitting or lying position and do not drive or use any kind of machinery immediately after taking this medication.
  • Do not consume alcohol while taking aliskiren as it may increase the side effects of aliskiren.
