Nitroin Tablet SR is an antibiotic that fights bacteria. It is used to treat and prevent bacterial infections of the urinary tract. It works by killing the bacteria that cause such disease. But, it will not treat a viral infection.

Nitroin Tablet SR should be taken in the dose and duration as advised by the doctor. You may take it with food to avoid nausea, which is a common side effect. It is better to have this medicine at the same time each day to get the most benefit and you should keep on taking this medicine for as long as you are prescribed it, even if your symptoms quickly improve. If you stop taking it too early the infection may return or worsen.
Some people may develop side effects like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. These side effects are usually temporary and go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Consult your doctor if these side effects bother you or do not go away. This medicine may turn your urine into dark yellow or brown color. But, this is normal and nothing to worry about.
Before starting treatment with this medicine, you should tell your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or suffering from any liver, kidney or heart problems or if you are allergic to any antibiotic.

Nitroin Tablet SR works by entering the bacteria that cause urinary tract infections (UTIs). Inside these bacteria, the medicine changes into active forms that damage essential parts of the bacterial cell, such as its DNA and proteins. Because of this damage, the bacteria cannot grow, repair themselves, or survive, which helps clear the infection from the urinary tract.

Nitroin Tablet SR may decrease alertness, affect your vision, or make you feel sleepy and dizzy. Do not drive if these symptoms occur.

Nitroin Tablet SR should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease. Dose adjustment may be needed.

Liver

Nitroin Tablet SR is unsafe to use in patients with liver disease and should be avoided.

Taking Nitroin with any of the following medicines can modify the effect of either of them and cause some undesirable side effects

Severe

Cholera Vaccine (Inactivated) (Oral Route)

Do not consume Cholera Vaccine (Inactivated) two weeks before and at least 10 days after consuming Nitrofurantoin. Please consult your doctor. Nitrofurantoin may reduce the efficacy of Cholera Vaccine (Inactivated).

Severe

Purified Vi Polysaccharide Typhoid Vaccine (Injection Route)

Nitrofurantoin may reduce the efficacy of Purified Vi Polysaccharide Typhoid Vaccine. Nitrofurantoin may reduce the efficacy of Purified Vi Polysaccharide Typhoid Vaccine.

Moderate

Clozapine (Oral Route)

Your doctor may monitor your blood cell count and adjust the doses as per the observations.

Mild

Sparfloxacin (Oral Route)

Talk to your doctor if you notice any unusual symptoms. Nitrofurantoin may reduce blood levels of Sparfloxacin.

Mild

Norfloxacin (Oral Route)

Talk to your doctor if you notice any unusual symptoms.Doctor may monitor your blood sugar level. Nitrofurantoin may fasten the elimination of Norfloxacin leading to reduced efficacy.

How long does Nitroin Tablet SR take to work on a UTI?

Nitroin Tablet SR starts acting quickly, but you will not start feeling better immediately after taking it. It may take a few days (2-3 days) before you see any improvement in your symptoms. If you do not start feeling better within 3 days of starting Nitroin Tablet SR or your condition worsens, contact your doctor. It is important to complete the full course of Nitroin Tablet SR as advised by your doctor, even if you start feeling better.

What happens if you take Nitroin Tablet SR without food?

You should take Nitroin Tablet SR with your meal or straightaway after the meal. Taking with food helps in absorption of medicine so that it works better. If you take it without food, you are likely to get an upset stomach. The symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and loss of appetite may also occur. Therefore, to avoid unpleasant side effects, take it exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

Does Nitroin Tablet SR make your urine orange?

Nitroin Tablet SR may turn your urine brown or dark yellow in colour. However, you need not worry as this is usually temporary and completely harmless effect. It will disappear once you stop taking Nitroin Tablet SR. Consult your doctor if you are not sure or still have any concern, but do not stop taking Nitroin Tablet SR.

Can Nitroin Tablet SR give you a yeast infection?

Yes, some people may get a fungal or yeast infection known as ‘thrush’ after taking Nitroin Tablet SR. This is because antibiotics kill the ‘good bacteria’ which help in preventing thrush. You should inform your doctor if you get vaginal itching or discharge after taking Nitroin Tablet SR or soon after stopping it.

Is Nitroin Tablet SR a strong antibiotic?

Yes, Nitroin Tablet SR is a strong antibiotic (or broad spectrum antibiotic), which means that it is effective against a wide variety of urinary bacteria. It is important that Nitroin Tablet SR should be given to treat or prevent infections that are proven to be caused by susceptible bacteria. This is usually evaluated by a culture test which demonstrates a range of bacteria which cannot grow in the prence of an antibiotic. Nitroin Tablet SR has seen to be effective against UTI caused by Escherichia coli, Enteroccus faecalis, Klebsiella species, Enterobacter species, Staphylococcus species: (eg S. aureus, S. saprophyticus, S. epidermidis). Some strains of Enterobacter and Klebsiella are resistant to Nitroin Tablet SR.
