Overview

Introduction

Efetil Tablet is a prescription medicine used for reducing mucous secretion in various lung diseases like bronchitis, asthma and emphysema. It is also used to treat poisoning caused by paracetamol medicine overdose.

Efetil Tablet can be taken with or without food, but take it at the same time to get the most benefit. It should be taken as your doctor's advice. The dose and how often you take it depends on what you are taking it for. Your doctor will decide how much you need to improve your symptoms. Dissolve the tablet in a glass of water and drink it immediately. You should take this medicine for as long as it is prescribed for you. In case, you have missed any doses than it is better to take the next dose as soon as you remember it. However, you should never take a double dose.

The most common side effects of this medicine include fever, nausea, vomiting, and rash.  If these bother you or appear serious, let your doctor know. There may be ways of reducing or preventing them. Generally, it is advised to drink plenty of fluids while on treatment with this medicine.

Before taking this medicine let your doctor know if you suffer from asthma, as close monitoring is required while taking this medicine. Your doctor should also know about all other medicines you are taking as many of these may make this medicine less effective or change the way it works. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Q. How is Efetil administered?

Efetil is given as a tablet form and can be taken with or without food. The tablets are to be taken twice daily in the morning and evening. The exact dosage and frequency of dose will be decided by the doctor on the basis of age and weight of the patient.

Q. Can I take Efetil if I have liver problems?

It has been found that in some cases Efetil can cause liver damage in prone patients and can lead to increased liver enzymes. Hence, it should be used with caution in patients with liver disease or who are prone to have liver disease/ history of liver disease. Before starting the medication inform your doctor if you have had a history of liver disease.

Q. Is Efetil safe in pregnancy?

No, Efetil is not safe during pregnancy. There is evidence to show that it can cause major birth defects in the newborn baby and can harm the baby in womb. It is not advised to take Efetil if you are planning to become pregnant. You should use reliable contraception methods while you take Efetil. Consult your doctor before starting this medication or planning pregnancy.

Q. Are there chances of anemia with Efetil?

Yes, there are chances that Efetil may cause anemia. It has been observed that Efetil can cause a dose-related decrease in hemoglobin in the blood which could lead to anemia. Regular hemoglobin check is advised while taking Efetil and consult your prescribing doctor for his advice. If the patients develop anemia then in some cases blood transfusion is done to correct it.

Q. Is Efetil safe for pregnant women?

Efetil can be given to a pregnant woman if the benefit of this medicine is more than the risk involved. Evidence shows it can be used in pregnant females without any gross risk to the fetus in the womb. Consult your doctor before starting the medication.

Q. How long can you take Efetil for?

The duration of treatment with Efetil will be decided by the doctor. It will depend on the type of disease for which it has been prescribed. For respiratory conditions, it can be taken for 5 days and can be further extended to 2 weeks depending upon the condition of the patient.

Q. Can Efetil be given to children below 2 years of age?

Medicines like Efetil are not recommended to be used in children under 2 years of age. This is because the medicine works by dissolving the mucus which can cause a block in the breathing airway, and children below 2 years of age may not be able to clear it or cough it out properly. Still, in certain conditions it can be prescribed by your doctor, hence, follow the instructions as provided. Consult the doctor for any query.

Q. Can I take cough syrups while taking Efetil?

No, you should not start taking cough syrups without consulting your doctor. The cough syrups which suppresses the cough should be avoided with this medication as it would interfere with the action of the medicine. Consult your doctor who will suggest an effective cough syrup which can increase the expectoration or sputum.
