Overview

Introduction

Avonza Tablet is a combination of antiretrovirals medicines. It is prescribed to treat HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) infection. It boosts up the immunity to fight against HIV to manage or treat AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome).

Avonza Tablet restricts the growth of HIV in the body and reduces the risk of getting HIV-related complications to improve the lifespan of an individual. The medicine should be taken in an empty stomach, preferably at bedtime for better efficacy. Taking these medicines regularly at the same time increases their effectiveness. A dose of this medicine must not be missed as it can affect your recovery. It is important to complete the full course of the treatment until your doctor advises you to stop it.

The most common side effects of this medicine are impaired concentration, abnormal dreams, headache, nausea, weakness and fatigue, nasal congestion, diarrhea, rash, dizziness, trouble sleeping, pain, depression, and cough. These are usually not serious and go away within 2-4 weeks of treatment, however, inform your doctor if they bother you or do not go away. As it can also make you feel dizzy or drowsy, it is advised to avoid driving. In addition to that, avoid alcohol consumption as it may increase the intensity of the side effects.

Before starting with the treatment, you should consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have any kidney, liver, or other diseases. Your doctor may suggest some laboratory tests before and during the treatment to check your blood counts, liver and kidney functioning, and other health and mental conditions. If you are HIV positive, you should not breastfeed or share personal belongings like razors or toothbrushes. Consult your doctor to know about safe sex methods to prevent transmission of HIV during intercourse.

How to cope with side effects?

The occurrence of side effects varies from person to person. The following are a few ways of dealing with some of the common side effects. However, consult your doctor if these persist.

  • Coping with Headache
Make sure you rest and drink plenty of fluids. Rest in a quiet, dimly lit room. Do not sleep more than you normally would. Do not strain your eyes (for example by looking at a screen). Do not drink alcohol. Headaches are usually temporary and usually go away with time. But, if they last longer or get worse, ask your doctor to recommend a painkiller.
  • Coping with Dizziness
This is usually short-lived and should go away within a few days. If this happens, stop what you are doing and sit or lie down until you feel better. Lying still in a dark, quiet room may help reduce the spinning feeling. Sleep with your head slightly raised on two or more pillows. Get up slowly from a lying or sitting position. Get plenty of rest and try to relax as being anxious can make it worse. Try taking this medicine at bedtime to reduce the symptoms. Drinking plenty of water and ginger tea may also help. Avoid alcohol, caffeine and smoking as it will make you feel worse. Avoid driving or using tools or machinery until you feel better.
  • Coping with Nausea
You can help yourself by eating small, frequent meals rather than large ones and drinking plenty of fluids. Eat slowly. Avoid fatty, fried, spicy and very sweet foods. Eat cold or slightly warm food if the smell of cooked or cooking food makes you feel sick. Get plenty of fresh air. You could also try chewing ginger or drinking ginger tea. Eat bananas to replace potassium in your blood which can drop if you are sick (vomit). Use oral rehydration salts to replace vitamins and minerals lost through being sick. There are some medicines that can help you stop from feeling sick. Speak to your doctor if your condition does not improve.
  • Coping with Weakness
Make sure you rest and drink plenty of fluids. Eat a well-balanced diet to keep your energy levels up. Do not drink too much alcohol. Do not drive or use tools or machinery until you feel better. Other things that can help include doing some gentle exercise every day, prioritizing and pacing your activities and having a short nap if you need to. If you are still having problems after a week, speak to your doctor, as they may want to change you to a different type of medicine.
  • Coping with Depression
It is important to talk to your doctor if you think you may be depressed. The sooner you do this, the sooner you can recover. Treatment for depression can involve a combination of lifestyle changes, talking therapies (such as counseling and cognitive behavioral therapy) and medicines (antidepressants). There are many things you can do for yourself if your depression is not too severe. Exercise is an extremely effective treatment for depression, so make sure you keep as active as possible. It can really lift your mood. A healthy diet can also make a big difference to your mood (as well as improving your physical health). Mindfulness is a technique that many people find helpful. It may be tempting to smoke or drink alcohol, but both will make things worse in the long run. Try talking to a friend or family member even if you do not feel comfortable doing this. Get into a routine with regular sleep patterns and meals. If you have thoughts of self-harm or suicide, contact your doctor immediately.
  • Coping with Cough
Get plenty of rest as exhausting or stressing out yourself could aggravate your condition. You should drink plenty of fluids as it will keep your throat moist and comfortable. Try taking steam inhalation. The moisture can ease your breathing and loosen mucus. You can consider sipping warm water or tea with honey and lemon. This will keep your nose and throat from being too dry. Using an air humidifier may also help. You can also gargle with salt water several times a day. See your doctor if your symptoms last longer than 3 weeks or get worse quickly. Avoid alcohol and do not smoke as they can aggravate your conditions.
  • Coping with Diarrhea
Keep up your intake of fluids and electrolytes (sugars and salts) to avoid getting dehydrated. Eat less fiber (avoid raw fruits, fruit juice and vegetables). Talk to your doctor about possible medication to manage diarrhea. Ask about reducing the dosage of your drug or other suitable treatments.
  • Coping with Impaired concentration
If this medicine makes you feel this way, stop what you are doing and sit or lie down until you feel better. If the feeling does not go away or troubles you, do not take any more medicine and speak to a pharmacist or your doctor.
  • Coping with Abnormal dreams
Try taking your medicine in the morning. If you have to take it more than once a day, speak to your doctor. To help yourself, try to go to bed and get up at the same time each day and reduce naps. Do some light exercise each day to tire yourself. Make sure the room is not too hot or too cold. Relax before bedtime by taking a bath or listening to music. Don't go to bed hungry. Try using earplugs. Meditation, deep breathing and relaxation exercises can also help. Talk to your doctor if you have tried these tips and they have not helped.
  • Coping with Nasal congestion (stuffy nose)
Try saline spray or nose drops. Taking steam inhalation or placing a warm wet towel on your face can also help. Use a humidifier if the air in your house is too dry. Using an extra pillow at night to lift up your head can also improve your breathing. If your condition does not improve, you should talk to your doctor. The doctor may be able to prescribe you certain over-the-counter medicines that can help improve your condition.
  • Coping with Pain
Some people use herbal remedies, acupuncture and psychological therapies to manage pain. Using hot and cold compress can also help reduce the pain temporarily. Ask your doctor about suitable painkillers if it bothers you or does not go away.
