- Swine flu is a viral infection that peaks in winter months and can lead to complications like pneumonia and respiratory failure.
- People at risk of infection include young children (<5 years), pregnant women, diabetics, patients with heart diseases and people with weak immune system.
- It spreads from person to person by coughing, sneezing and contact with contaminated surfaces
- Symptoms include sudden onset high grade fever (>100°F), cough, headache, body aches, sore throat, running nose, chills and fatigue.
- There are 4 rules of prevention: Clean, Cover, Contact and Vaccination
- CLEAN: wash your hands frequently. Scrub your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer (with at least 60% alcohol).
- COVER: Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and discard the used tissue.
- CONTACT: Avoid over crowded places and direct contact with swine flu patients. If you feel sick, stay away from work/school and limit contact with others.
- VACCINATION: Swine flu can be prevented by a vaccine (example: Vaxigrip) given yearly before the onset of winter season. Vaccination is recommended for children (6 months and 5 years), people above 50 years, people suffering from chronic respiratory and heart problems, diabetes, pregnant women.
- Treatment includes antiviral medicines (example: Oseltamivir phosphate) to stop viral growth and painkillers for pain relief and fever.
