An eschar (cigarette burn-like sore) at the site of infection and swollen lymph nodes may also occur. The diagnosis is difficult as the clinical symptoms and signs are similar to many other febrile diseases and have relied on the detection of O. tsutsugamushi antibodies during the acute phase of the disease.
