PLA2 receptor antibody Primary membranous Glomerulopathy, Serum test detects autoantibodies (specific proteins) against phospholipase A2 receptors (PLA2R) which is useful in the diagnosis of primary membranous glomerulonephritis (PMGN), an autoimmune disease wherein antibodies target glomeruli thus leading to progressive reduction in kidney function. PMGN is the most common cause of nephrotic syndrome. Autoantibodies of class IgG against PLA2R are highly specific for the diagnosis of primary MGN and can be detected in the serum of up to 70-80% of patients. It can be done in people who have signs and symptoms of kidney disease such as persistent proteinuria, decreased kidney function, or kidney failure, even after the exclusion of other causes such as kidney stones, urinary tract infections, and other kidney diseases. This test may also be done in patients with unexplained hypertension, as primary membranous nephropathy can be a cause of hypertension.
