MRI Cranio-Vertebral (CV) Junction

The MRI Cranio-Vertebral (CV) Junction is a specialized imaging test that uses magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to capture detailed images of the junction between the skull (cranium) and the upper spine (vertebrae). This area includes the base of the skull, the first two cervical vertebrae (C1 and C2), and surrounding nerves, ligaments, and soft tissues.

Doctors may recommend this scan if you have symptoms like neck pain, restricted head movement, numbness, tingling, balance issues, or signs of spinal cord compression. It is commonly used to detect congenital abnormalities, trauma, tumors, inflammatory conditions, or craniovertebral instability.

The scan is safe, painless, and noninvasive, using no radiation. You’ll be asked to lie still in the MRI scanner while high-resolution images are taken. A contrast dye may be used in some cases for better visibility of blood vessels and soft tissues. Inform your doctor if you have metal implants, kidney issues, or are pregnant, as special precautions may be needed.
