Mammography is a low dose x-ray procedure used to detect breast cancer. In a population of less than 40 years old females this test is used as a screening procedure for early diagnosis. It is also advised for the women having symptoms such as a lump or pain in breasts and its surrounding areas or unusual nipple discharge.
Monthly self evaluation of breasts is also recommended to women for early diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. The whole procedure takes only few minutes. It is advised to avoid perfume, powder, and deodorant on the day of test as it may appear as white patches on X-ray.

Preparations

Avoid using deodorant, perfume, talcum powder, or lotion on your underarms or chest area, as these can show up on the X-ray and affect the results.

Wear a two-piece outfit (like a top and bottom) so you only need to remove your top for the scan.

If you still have menstrual periods, try to schedule the test one week after your period, when breasts are less tender.

Inform your doctor/technician if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

You may have to remove your jewelry and any metal objects which might interfere with the image.
