Cyfra (Ca) 21-1

CYFRA 21-1 is a fragment of cytokeratin 19, a structural protein present in epithelial cells, including lung tissue. When lung cells are damaged or undergo malignant changes, fragments of cytokeratin 19 are released into the blood. Elevated CYFRA 21-1 levels may indicate the presence of lung cancer, especially non-small cell lung cancer, and can also help monitor response to treatment or detect recurrence after therapy. The Cyfra (Ca) 21-1 test measures the level of this protein fragment in the blood and is mainly used as a tumor marker for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), including squamous cell carcinoma of the lung.

Doctors may recommend the CYFRA 21-1 test when there are symptoms suggestive of lung cancer, such as a persistent cough, chest pain, or difficulty breathing. It may also be advised for individuals at high risk of developing lung cancer due to factors like a history of smoking or occupational exposure. Additionally, the test is commonly used for patients who have already been diagnosed with lung cancer to monitor treatment effectiveness and detect any recurrence.
