Chromogranin A is a protein released by neuroendocrine cells into the blood in a moderate amount. An elevated amount of chromogranin A above normal level in the blood is an indication of a neuroendocrine tumor. This test is recommended by a physician if he suspects any symptoms of neuroendocrine tumor such as flushing of the face or neck, diarrhea, signs of intestinal blockage, rapid heart rate, chest pain and difficulty in breathing.

This test aids in the diagnosis of medical conditions including carcinoid tumors, insulinomas, medullary thyroid carcinomas, pheochromocytoma, neuroblastoma, small cell lung cancer and prostate cancer. It is also useful in monitoring the efficacy of a neuroendocrine tumor treatment and recurrence of the tumor.
