Brucella - IgM antibody

Brucellosis is an infectious disease caused by the Brucella species of bacteria. It is typically transmitted to humans through direct contact with infected animals or by consuming unpasteurized dairy products such as milk, cheese, or butter. It is also known as “undulant fever” due to its characteristic pattern of rising and falling fever.

The Brucella - IgM antibody test is used to detect antibodies called immunoglobulin M (IgM) that appear early in the course of infection, typically within the first week of symptom onset. These antibodies serve as crucial markers for recent or ongoing infection of Brucella. Detecting these antibodies helps in the early diagnosis of brucellosis, distinguishing acute infections from chronic ones, and guiding timely treatment to prevent complications.

Brucellosis may present with non-specific symptoms like intermittent fever, chills, excessive sweating, fatigue, joint and muscle pain, and loss of appetite. These symptoms can mimic other illnesses like malaria, typhoid, or tuberculosis, which makes laboratory testing essential for an accurate diagnosis. The Brucella - IgM antibody plays a key role in identifying the infection, particularly in individuals with occupational exposure (e.g., farmers, veterinarians, slaughterhouse workers and  laboratory staff who handle infected animals or their fluids, or manipulate the bacteria directly) or those who have consumed unpasteurized dairy products. It also helps assess how well the treatment is working in individuals already diagnosed with brucellosis and to confirm the absence of infection in high-risk individuals, such as laboratory personnel or livestock handlers. Early detection enables prompt antibiotic treatment and helps prevent serious complications.

No special preparation is required for this test. However, the doctor should be informed about all medications, supplements, or underlying illnesses, as these factors can affect the test results.
