Autoimmune Encephalitis Profile - 2

The Autoimmune Encephalitis Profile - 2 is a blood test that looks for specific antibodies in your blood. These antibodies can attack your brain, causing a condition called autoimmune encephalitis, which leads to inflammation and brain dysfunction.

Understanding Autoimmune Encephalitis Profile - 2
Autoimmune encephalitis is a serious but rare condition in which your own immune system attacks the brain, leading to inflammation and a wide range of neurological and psychiatric symptoms. These can include memory loss, confusion, seizures, hallucinations, or changes in behavior and mood.
The Autoimmune Encephalitis Profile - 2 helps doctors detect specific antibodies known to cause this condition, including those that target brain receptors like NMDA, AMPA, and GABA-B, as well as other antibodies like VGKC (LGI1 & CASPR2) and DPPX. Finding these antibodies helps confirm a diagnosis of autoimmune encephalitis after other causes, such as infections, have been ruled out.
Early and accurate diagnosis is critical, as the condition can be treated with therapies that help suppress the immune system.
Your doctor may recommend the Autoimmune Encephalitis Profile - 2 test if you have new or unexplained neurological symptoms. These symptoms can include seizures of unknown origin, hallucinations or confusion, and new or worsening neuropsychiatric symptoms. The test may also be recommended for patients with certain tumors who show signs of encephalitis (brain inflammation) or those with neuromyotonia (a disorder that causes muscle stiffness and continuous muscle activity). It is often performed with other tests to get a complete picture of your health.
No special preparation is needed for this test. However, you should inform your doctor about all medications and supplements you are taking, as they could affect the results.
Test result ranges are approximate and may differ slightly between labs depending on the methods and guidelines. Do not self-medicate, and always consult a doctor to understand the test results correctly.
Please note: This is an outsourced test. The sample is collected by TATA 1MG and processed at a NABL accredited partnered lab.
What does Autoimmune Encephalitis Profile - 2 measure?
Contains 6 testsThe Autoimmune Encephalitis Profile - 2 measures the levels of several specific antibodies in the blood that are known to cause autoimmune encephalitis. These include:
- Voltage-Gated Potassium Channel antibody (VGKC)
- N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antibodies
- α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) receptor antibodies
- Gamma-aminobutyric acid type B (GABA-B) receptor antibodies
- Dipeptidyl-peptidase-like protein 6 (DPPX) antibodies
The presence of these antibodies suggests that the immune system is mistakenly attacking the brain.
The VGKC Antibody test measures the presence and concentration of antibodies directed against voltage-gated potassium channels (VGKC) associated proteins (Leucine-rich glioma inactivated protein 1(LGI1) and Contactin-associated protein 2 (CASPR2) in the blood. These antibodies indicate that the immune system is mistakenly attacking nerve cells, which can disrupt normal nerve signaling.
Elevated VGKC antibody levels may suggest autoimmune neurological disorders such as limbic encephalitis, Morvan’s syndrome, or neuromyotonia. Detecting and quantifying these antibodies helps doctors confirm the diagnosis, guide treatment strategies, and monitor the effectiveness of immunotherapy. Low or undetectable levels typically indicate that VGKC-mediated autoimmune activity is unlikely.
