The Lipoprotein (a) is a blood test that measures the level of lipoprotein A which is a mixture of fat and protein and is a type of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or bad cholesterol. This test helps in the assessment of cardiovascular risk and helps in the diagnosis of heart attack, stroke, etc. It can be also done if your doctor suspects you of having familial hypercholesterolemia, a hereditary disorder causing high levels of bad cholesterol. Additionally, it can be done if you have previously had a heart attack or stroke or if your cholesterol and LDL levels are highly elevated. The Lipoprotein (a) test is not intended to be a routine screening test and should be done if you have already been identified to be at higher risk of cardiovascular problems.
