Alendronic Acid(70 mg)

Prevention and treatment of post-menopausal osteoporosis in women.
Alendronic acid may be used in some cancers and diseases to slow down the activity of osteoclasts, the cells that break down bone.  Increased activity of these cells increases the levels of calcium in the blood.
Paget’s disease of the bone.

How it works

Alendronic acid is a bisphosphonate. It slows down osteoclasts, the cells that break down bone. This prevents bone loss and lowers the risk of bone fractures.

Common side effects

Esophageal ulcer, Esophageal erosions, Esophagitis, Rash, Gastrointestinal discomfort, Abdominal pain, Constipation, Decreased phosphate level in blood, Diarrhoea, Difficulty in swallowing, Skin redness, Flatulence, Headache, Heartburn, Muscle pain, Retrosternal pain
Elemental Calcium(500 mg)

Acute hypocalcaemia, hyperphosphataemia, hypocalcaemia, in hypocalcaemic tetany, osteoporosis prophylaxis, osteoporosis, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, severe hyperkalaemia.

How it works

The skeleton acts as a major mineral storage site for the element and releases Ca2+ ions into the bloodstream under controlled conditions. Circulating calcium is either in the free, ionized form or bound to blood proteins such as serum albumin. Parathyroid hormone (secreted from the parathyroid gland) regulates the resorption of Ca2+ from bone. Calcitonin stimulates incorporation of calcium in bone, although this process is largely independent of calcitonin. The best-absorbed form of calcium from a pill is a calcium salt like carbonate or phosphate. Calcium gluconate and calcium lactate are absorbed well by pregnant women. Seniors absorb calcium lactate, gluconate and citrate better unless they take their calcium supplement with a full breakfast.

Common side effects

Nausea, Abdominal pain, Cardiac arrest, Constipation, Dry mouth, Fainting, Headache, Decreased phosphate level in blood, Decreased blood pressure, Loss of appetite, Sinus bradycardia, Vomiting
Vitamin D3(250 iu)

Vitamin D3 is used for the prevention and treatment of vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D3 is important for absorption of calcium in the body. It is also used to prevent bone disorders such as osteomalacia and rickets.

How it works

Vitamin D3 increases the absorption of calcium and phosphorous that are vital in forming and maintaining strong bones. It is also required in regulating cell growth and maintaining a healthy immune system.

Common side effects

Excessive thirst, Muscle weakness, Constipation, Increased calcium in urine, Loss of appetite, Stomach pain, Sickness, Increased calcium level in blood, Confusion, Drowsiness
