Rhogam 300mcg Injection



Rhogam 300mcg Injection is indicated to prevent antibodies from forming after a person with Rh-negative blood receives a transfusion with Rh-positive blood, or during pregnancy when a mother has Rh-negative blood and the baby is Rh-positive.

Rhogam 300mcg Injection is given for Rh prophylaxis in pregnancy related complications. It is also approved for Incompatible transfusions in Rh-negative individuals transfused with blood components containing Rh-positive red blood cells (RBCs). It is approved for immune thrombocytopenic purpura condition with decreased number of circulating platelets leading to easy bruising.Your doctor or nurse will give you this injection. Kindly do not self administer. The injection is given into a muscle; normally it is given in the upper arm. You will routinely be offered an anti-D injection routinely at 28 weeks of pregnancy and within 72 hours of birth, if your baby is Rh D positive.

This medicine may sometimes cause side effects like fever, headache, feeling of discomfort, and injection site tenderness or pain. If you get any of these, or other reactions, or just feel unwell, you should tell your doctor. There may be ways of preventing or reducing these effects.

Before using it, you should tell your doctor if you have any problems with blood clotting and if you have recently had, or plan to have, a vaccination.

How to cope with side effects?

The occurrence of side effects varies from person to person. The following are a few ways of dealing with some of the common side effects. However, consult your doctor if these persist.

  • Coping with Headache
    Make sure you rest and drink plenty of fluids. Rest in a quiet, dimly lit room. Do not sleep more than you normally would. Do not strain your eyes (for example by looking at a screen). Do not drink alcohol. Headaches are usually temporary and usually go away with time. But, if they last longer or get worse, ask your doctor to recommend a painkiller.
  • Coping with Injection site tenderness and Injection site pain
    Try to change the area of injection and the exact site of injection each time. Apply a cold compress to the injection site. These symptoms are usually mild and should only last a few hours. You can ask your doctor to recommend a medicine if it is bothering you.

How Rhogam Injection works

Anti-Rh D immunoglobulin belongs to class of drugs called immunoglobulin. It removes or nullifies any fetal rhesus-D positive red blood cells that enter the rhesus-D negative maternal blood stream during childbirth, abortion, or any accident or intervention during pregnancy which might lead to bleeding across the placenta.
