It depends on the severity of the patient's condition. You doctor would have the right answer as he know the whole case.
Its been more than a year that i have been suffering from anxiety related to my health. Last year a small polyp was found in my duodenum and my doctor said its nothing to worry about. But i have been constantly seeking information about it in internet and they all say that polyp becomes cancer. Its been hampering my day to day life. After few days i started having regular anxiety and constantly check for body symptom. Like a black on my skin feels like melanoma, a little lightheadedness as brain tumour, fever as leukaemia. I haven't told anyone about it. But i cannot stay like this . What do i do? Is it really my anxiety or do i have any serious disease ?
Dr. Jyoti Kapoor Madan
Psychiatry
Anxiety is the result of a hyperarousal state of nervous system due to a low threshold for threat perception. In simpler words, it's an ongoing flight or fight response. It can elicit a neuro-hormonal response understood as Flight or Fright reaction kicking in physiological cascade of symptoms ranging from palpitations, tachycardia, breathlessness, increased bowel movement, increase frequency of urination, dizziness, muscle tension or pain, trembling, dizziness, blurring of vision to restlessness, confusion and fainting spells. Chronic stress causes prolonged anxiety response with the consequences of slowed cognition , lack of concentration, headaches, fluctuations in blood pressure, irritable bowel syndrome with persistent Bowel movement issues and increased wear and tear of body tissues. Other somatic symptoms can also be seen like feeling of obstruction in throat or thrust tightness, stomach ache, nausea, recurrent vomiting, increased body temperature, feeling of electrical sensations or ants on skin ( paresthesia) etc. The interest in routine activities like eating, socialising with friends and family and sex goes down. Identifying your stressors, learning to deal with them, de stressing regularly by doing something that makes one feel good, yoga and meditation are some non pharmacological strategies to deal with it. If the condition is persisting for a long time, it's better to see a psychiatrist.
