Dr. Ila Jain Khandelwal
Dear PATIENT you for sharing your reports with me. C Peptide levels are generally high in type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance while levels are generally low in type 1 diabetes. The values can also vary depending upon anti diabetic or insulin medicine if you are taking. Please consult a diabetologist for the exact interpretation.

Hopefully, they can negotiate the regulations for mass production so that an abundant supply of beta cells is available an new and innovative methods will be developed to cure/treat Type 1 diabetes. Type I diabetes is an autoimmune condition whereby the body kills off its own beta (insulin producing) cells resulting in the need for daily insulin administration through the skin. Replacing beta cells in the first step towards a cure, but the replaced beta cells need to be protected from the body?s autoimmune response. This means protecting them in a coating or taking drugs to prevent the response (possible worse side effects than diabetes).

User Feedback

Q. Is it safe to use Humalog during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

Humalog does not affect pregnant women or their fetus/newborn. Insulin requirements usually fall during the first trimester and increase during the second and third trimesters. Patients with diabetes should inform their doctor if they are pregnant or are planning to conceive. Careful monitoring of glucose control, as well as general health, is essential in pregnant patients with diabetes. Patients with diabetes who are breastfeeding may require adjustments in insulin dose, diet or both.

Q. What are the serious side effects that may be caused by Humalog?

Humalog may cause low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) with dizziness or lightheadedness, sweating, confusion, headache, blurred vision, slurred speech, shakiness, fast heartbeat, hunger, anxiety, irritability, or mood changes. Use of Insulin Lispro can affect the potassium levels in your blood. It can also cause weight loss or weight gain. You may notice changes in your diet or fall ill or feel tired. It can also cause serious allergic reactions which may lead to rashes all over the body, trouble breathing, fast heartbeat, sweating and a feeling of fainting. Fluid retention and heart failure can also be seen if Humalog is taken with other antidiabetic medicines like Thiazolidinediones (TZDs).

Q. What should I do if I experience any side effects?

If you experience any side effects, please contact your doctor.

Q. Which drugs may increase the risk of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar level) when given along with Humalog?

The use of Humalog can cause hypoglycemia if co-administered with antidiabetic agents, salicylates, sulfonamide antibiotics, monoamine oxidase inhibitors. Using Humalog with fluoxetine, pramlintide, disopyramide, fibrates, propoxyphene, pentoxifylline can increase the threat of hypoglycemia. Use of ACE inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor blocking agents, and somatostatin analogs (for e.g. octreotide) with Humalog can also cause hypoglycemia. Dose adjustment and increased frequency of glucose monitoring may be required when Humalog is co-administered with these drugs.

Q. Does Humalog need to be refrigerated?

Unopened cartridges and unused pre-filled pens of Humalog must be stored in a refrigerator where the temperature is between 2°C to 8°C. When the cartridge has been inserted into the injection pen, it should not be refrigerated and should be kept at room temperature.

Q. What should I do if the dose knob is hard to push?

Pushing the dose knob more slowly will make it easier to inject. It could also be possible that your needle is blocked. Put on a new needle and prime the pen.

Q. How do I inject the dose of my insulin?

Wash your hands before injecting. Choose a site for injection and clean the skin as instructed. Remove outer needle cap. Stabilize the skin by spreading it or pinching up a large area. Insert the needle as instructed. Press the knob. Pull the needle out and apply gentle pressure over the injection site for several seconds. Do not rub the area. Using the outer needle cap, unscrew the needle and dispose of safely. Injection sites should be rotated so that the same site is not used more than once in a month.

Q. Can Humalog be mixed with other insulin preparations?

Humalog solution must not be mixed with any other insulin preparation. Also, do not mix insulin in vials with insulin in cartridges.

Q. Where do I inject Humalog?

Try not to inject on the same spot every time. Rotate between the typical injection sites, such as abdomen, buttocks, upper legs, or upper arms. Never inject Humalog into a muscle or vein.

Q. Is it necessary to prime my pen before using it?

Yes, you need to prime your pen. Priming means removing the air from needle and cartridge that may have collected. If you do not prime, you may get too much or too little insulin. You need to turn the dose knob to 2 units. Hold your pen with the needle pointing up. Tap the cartridge holder gently to collect air bubbles at the top. Continue holding your pen with the needle pointing up. Push the dose knob in until it stops and "0" is seen in the dose window. Hold the dose knob in and count to 5 slowly. You should see insulin at the tip of the needle.
