Epilepsy requires regular treatment with anticonvulsants like encorate chrono for at least 3 years of seizure free period after which medicines may be tapered off unless seizures reappear. At present, there are no other effective treatment options.
I'm suffering from Epilepsy (mainly GTCs) from last 12 years. Currently on Multiple AEDs 1. Topamac 400mg/day, 2. Encorate Chrono 800mg/day, 3. Lonazep 2mg/day. My present problem is I have some onset of agitation and anger and loss my control on my self. Previously I was suggested Quel (quetiapine) 25mg (OD.HS) for anger, but it did not work, recently my Neurologist prescribed me Zolfresh 5mg (OD.HS). Zolfresh reduced my agitation and anger but increased my sleep. My question is whether Anger is normal in Epilepsy and how to overcome this anger. Here to mention that I practice meditation regularly.
Dr. Jyoti Kapoor Madan
Psychiatrist
Zolpidem is a sleep inducer with high addictive potential. If agitation and anger are not a part of your personality, the genesis of it needs to be explored and understood. It may happen in depression, anxiety, mood disorders, substance use disorders, psychotic disorders or impulse control disorders etc. Anger management is aimed at identifying the triggers and the thought patterns behind this response. You can start by identifying what makes you angry and why and then start analysing your perceptions. You may see a psychotherapist/psychiatrist to guide you. Some anger issues are biological impulse control issues and one needs medicines to treat them. Treatment of primary psychiatric conditions like depression, anxiety and psychosis also mitigates anger.

Epilepsy medicines may need to be continued for longer duration if seizures recur. Medicines weather it is divalproex sodium or leviteracetam need to be taken in adequate doses for seizure control. Donot reduce medicine without doctor's advice and continue follow up with your doctor. If encourage chrono suits you better and there are no liver related side effects, it is also a good choice.

Sir i have been taking tegrital 200 for epileptic fits for the last 21 years. I had fits when i was 24 and doctor prescribed 2 tabs of tegrital 200 daily. I started the medicine and it is working fine till date. I havent seen my doctor ever since. Is it safe to take this drug for such a long time?
Dr. Jyoti Kapoor Madan

Usual treatment duration for epilepsy is for three years, after which medicines are gradually tapered of. Tegrital(carbamazepine) can have ill effect on kidneys. You need regular Kudney Function Test and Complete Blood Counts to monitor any side effect.
