How to use Elfecol Tablet

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Elfecol Tablet may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.
Take it with food if stomach upset occurs.

How Elfecol Tablet works

Elfecol Tablet is a combination of four medicines: Caffeine, Paracetamol / Acetaminophen, Levocetirizine and Phenylephrine. Caffeine is a decongestant which narrows small blood vessels providing relief from congestion or stuffiness in the nose. Paracetamol / Acetaminophen is an antiallergic which relieves symptoms like runny nose, watery eyes and sneezing. Levocetirizine is an analgesic (pain reliever) and antipyretic (fever reducer). It blocks the release of certain chemical messengers in the brain that are responsible for pain and fever. Phenylephrine is a stimulant which prevents sleepiness caused by Paracetamol / Acetaminophen. Paracetamol is an analgesic (pain reliever) and antipyretic (fever reducer). It blocks the release of certain chemical messengers in the brain that cause pain and fever. Levocetirizine is an antiallergic which relieves allergy symptoms like runny nose, watery eyes and sneezing. Caffeine is a stimulant which increases the effectiveness of paracetamol and decreases sleepiness due to cetirizine. Phenylephrine is a decongestant which narrows the small blood vessels providing temporary relief from congestion or stuffiness in the nose.

Pregnancy
WEIGH RISKS VS BENEFITS
Elfecol Tablet may be unsafe to use during pregnancy.
Animal studies have shown adverse effects on the foetus, however, there are limited human studies. The benefits from use in pregnant women may be acceptable despite the risk. Please consult your doctor.
Lactation
Elfecol Tablet is probably safe to use during lactation. Limited human data suggests that the drug does not represent a significant risk to the baby.
Driving
Elfecol Tablet may make you feel dizzy, sleepy, tired, or decrease alertness. If this happens, do not drive.
Kidney
CAUTION
Elfecol Tablet should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease. Dose adjustment of Elfecol Tablet may be needed. Please consult your doctor.
Use of Elfecol Tablet is not recommended in patients with severe kidney disease.
Liver

Q. What is Elfecol?
Elfecol is a combination of four medicines: Caffeine, Paracetamol, Levocetirizine and Phenylephrine. This combination is helpful in relieving the symptoms of cold such as body ache, headache, fatigue, fever, watery eyes, sneezing, cough, sore throat, runny and stuffy nose.
Q. Are there any foods which I have to avoid while taking Elfecol?
Elfecol contains caffeine, so, it is preferable to avoid medicines or food that also contains caffeine like coffee, tea, cola drinks, chocolate as they may add to your total caffeine intake. Increased caffeine intake can cause difficulty in sleeping, you may experience tremors and/or may have chest discomfort. Also avoid drinking alcohol (beer, wine etc) while you are taking this medicine.
Q. Can the use of Elfecol cause sleepiness or drowsiness?
Yes, Elfecol may make you feel drowsy or may cause you to fall asleep during your regular daily activities. Do not drive car, operate machinery, work at heights, or participate in potentially dangerous activities at the beginning of your treatment until you know how the medicine affects you. Inform your doctor if you experience such episode while you are taking this medicine.
Q. What are the instructions for the storage and disposal of Elfecol?
Keep this medicine in the packet or container it came in, tightly closed. Store it as mentioned on the pack or label. Dispose of the unused medicine. Make sure it is not consumed by pets, children, and other people.
Q. Are there any serious side effects associated with the use of Elfecol?
Serious side effects with Elfecol are uncommon and rare. Tell your doctor as soon as possible if you notice any of the following: allergic reactions, skin rash or peeling, mouth ulcers, breathing problems, unexplained bleeding, recurrent fevers or infections, vision disturbances, fast or irregular heartbeat.
Q. Will Elfecol be more effective if taken in more than recommended dose?
No, taking a higher than the recommended dose may not be more effective, rather it may increase the chances of having serious side effects and toxicity. If you do not find any relief in your symptoms or there is an increased severity of your symptoms while you are taking this medicine in the recommended doses, please consult your doctor.
Q. Are there any contraindication associated with use of this drug?
Yes, use of Elfecol should be avoided or taken when advised by the doctor if you have high blood pressure (hypertension), any underlying serious heart condition or cardiovascular disorder, any history of stomach ulcers or overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism). The use of Elfecol should also be avoided if you are taking antidepressant drugs called monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI’s) like phenelzine and isocarboxazid or tricyclic antidepressants like imipramine and amitriptyline.
Q. Can I breastfeed while taking Elfecol?
No, it is not advisable to breastfeed while using Elfecol. This medicine contains Levocetirizine, an antihistamine which can pass into the breast milk and may harm the baby. Inform your healthcare provider if you are advised to take this medicine while you are breastfeeding the baby.
