Dextrose is used in short term fluid replacement after trauma.

How it works

Dextrose are large molecular weight substances which remain resctricted within the blood vessels and generate oncotic pressure (pressure produced by proteins in the blood).

Common side effects

Paresthesia (tingling or pricking sensation), Anaphylactic reaction, Convulsion, Diabetes, Decreased potassium level in blood, Decreased magnesium level in blood, Decreased phosphate level in blood, Inflammation of vein due to blood clot in the blood vessels, Injection site pain, Water intoxication

Uses

Sodium Chloride is used in short term fluid replacement after trauma, dehydration and irrigation solution for eye/nose.

How it works

Sodium chloride belongs to the class of medications called electrolytes or osmotic agents. It works by controlling fluid and electrolyte balance and increases water retention (by regulating osmotic pressure), thereby increasing water content in the body. It also plays an important role in maintenance of acid-base balance of body fluids.
