How to cope with side effects?

The occurrence of side effects varies from person to person. The following are a few ways of dealing with some of the common side effects. However, consult your doctor if these persist.

  • Coping with Upset stomach
Try taking your medicine with a meal or snack, or shortly after eating. It might help to eat smaller and more frequent meals, and to eat and drink slowly. Avoid foods which can irritate your stomach such as carbonated soft drinks, caffeine, fatty and spicy foods, mints and citrus fruits. Quit smoking and alcohol because they increase the symptoms. Do not eat for 3 or 4 hours before going to bed. Try raising the head of your bed at night or use extra pillows. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about medicines that may help, such as antacids, if your condition does not improve.
  • Coping with Rash
There are many treatments for a wide range of skin problems. Avoid hot showers or baths because hot water can irritate the skin. Make sure to pat dry your skin after a bath or shower. Do not rub or scratch the affected area. Leave the skin exposed to the air as much as possible. Do not use perfumed soaps or deodorants. Water containing chlorine can make most skin problems worse, so avoid swimming. Avoid spicy foods, alcohol, tobacco smoke and caffeine as it may also make itching worse. Avoid excessive sun exposure. Always use sunscreen and protective clothing when outdoors. Moisturizers can be used regularly to soothe and hydrate the affected area. If it does not get better within a week, speak to a pharmacist or doctor.
  • Coping with Paresthesia (tingling or pricking sensation)
Massaging the numb area can help improve blood flow and provide relief. Try warming your hands and feet if they are cold. In case they are hot, try cooling them down. Get plenty of rest as lack of proper sleep may worsen the condition. Reducing stress, avoiding alcohol, exercising regularly, and getting enough vitamins and nutrients through your diet can also make you feel better.
  • Coping with Dizziness
This is usually short-lived and should go away within a few days. If this happens, stop what you are doing and sit or lie down until you feel better. Lying still in a dark, quiet room may help reduce the spinning feeling. Sleep with your head slightly raised on two or more pillows. Get up slowly from a lying or sitting position. Get plenty of rest and try to relax as being anxious can make it worse. Try taking this medicine at bedtime to reduce the symptoms. Drinking plenty of water and ginger tea may also help. Avoid alcohol, caffeine and smoking as it will make you feel worse. Avoid driving or using tools or machinery until you feel better.

Vomiting Loose motion. If it?s a breastfed baby, breastfeed as and when the baby demands. It helps to restore the water lost from the body. If the baby is formula fed or above 6 months, ORS could be given. ORS packets are easily available in medical stores. If the ORS packets are not available, 1 teaspoon of sugar and equal amount of salt can be mixed in the cooled boiled water and provided after each bowel movement. This helps to restore the lost ions and water from the body. There are many underlying causes of Patient?s symptoms. Different cause needs different treatment. Specific treatment cannot be given unless we establish exact underlying cause. Advice given without doing clinical examination can be imperfect or some time harmful to patient.
