Apidra 100IU/ml Solution for Injection

Overview

Introduction

Apidra 100IU/ml Solution for Injection is used to improve blood sugar control in people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus. It’s a fast-acting type of insulin that helps to lower blood sugar levels after meals and reduce the chances of developing serious complications of diabetes.

Apidra 100IU/ml Solution for Injection is normally prescribed along with a long-acting type of insulin or other diabetes medicines. Your doctor or nurse will teach you the correct way of injecting it under the skin. It should be taken 15 minutes before a meal or within 20 minutes after starting a meal. Do not stop taking it unless your doctor tells you to. It is only part of a treatment program that should also include a healthy diet, regular exercise, and weight reduction as advised by your doctor.

Check your blood sugar levels regularly, keep track of your results and share them with your doctor. This is very important to work out the correct dose of the medicine for you.

The most common side effect of this medicine is low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia). To prevent this, it's important to always inject the correct dose of medicine only, have regular meals, and monitor your blood sugar levels regularly. Drinking excessive alcohol can also lead to a fall in your blood sugar levels. Other side effects include allergy at the injection site like redness, swelling, or hard lumps (lipodystrophy). Some people gain weight while taking insulin.

Do not use this medicine when you have low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia). Tell your doctor if you have ever had kidney, liver or heart problems before starting treatment. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult their doctor before using it.

Dr. Ila Jain Khandelwal
Pathologist
Dear PATIENT you for sharing your reports with me. C Peptide levels are generally high in type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance while levels are generally low in type 1 diabetes. The values can also vary depending upon anti diabetic or insulin medicine if you are taking. Please consult a diabetologist for the exact interpretation.

Hopefully, they can negotiate the regulations for mass production so that an abundant supply of beta cells is available an new and innovative methods will be developed to cure/treat Type 1 diabetes. Type I diabetes is an autoimmune condition whereby the body kills off its own beta (insulin producing) cells resulting in the need for daily insulin administration through the skin. Replacing beta cells in the first step towards a cure, but the replaced beta cells need to be protected from the body?s autoimmune response. This means protecting them in a coating or taking drugs to prevent the response (possible worse side effects than diabetes).

FAQs

Q. I am taking pioglitazone for diabetes. Can I take Apidra with it?

You have to be extra careful if you are taking both pioglitazone and glulisine. Pioglitazone can cause fluid retention in your body, especially when used in combination with insulin. You may develop symptoms and signs of heart failure or if you already have heart failure, it may get aggravated. Take the advice of your doctor.

Q. I started using Apidra recently and was told to not inject into the same spot over and over again. Why?

If you use the same spot repeatedly, your body reacts by creating changes in the fatty tissue just under the skin. It can either cause lipodystrophy or lipohypertrophy. In lipodystrophy, the fat tissue becomes thin and creates a pit under the skin. Whereas, in lipohypertrophy, a little extra fat tissue grows at the frequently used injection spot and creates a lump just under the skin. Either one of these will change the absorption time of insulin resulting in delayed action. Also, many people do not like the way these lumps and pittings look.

Q. What if I accidentally inject Apidra into a muscle?

You should learn to correctly inject insulin just beneath the skin, by pinching up some skin and fat. Injecting Apidra into a muscle would make its absorption even more rapid. As a result, the chance of having a serious episode of hypoglycemia or low blood sugar would increase.

Q. I have been taking metoprolol for high blood pressure for a long time. Do I need to be careful about anything if I have started glulisine now?

Yes, you need to be careful because symptoms of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) like increased heart rate may not be noticed by you. Keep a regular check on your blood sugar and consult your doctor if the problem persists.

Q. Can Apidra be stopped once started?

It depends on whether you have type I diabetes mellitus (body does not produce insulin) or type II (body does not respond to insulin). With type I, insulin is the only treatment available, and you cannot stop it. With type II diabetes mellitus, you may be able to go off insulin if you can get your blood sugar under control with proper diet and exercise. Always consult the doctor in case you want to stop Apidra.
