The ankle comprises the tibia, fibula, and talus bones, as well as the ankle and syndesmosis joint. In Anterior-Posterior (AP) projection, X -rays pass from the front to the back of the patient, to create a picture of the area. A radiologist then assesses the images and shares a report that can help in diagnosing fractured bones in the ankle joint, and monitors healing. It also detects infection, osteoporosis, bone deformities and arthritis. Common symptoms include pain, tenderness, swelling or deformity of the ankle joint.

An ankle view x-ray typically takes ~15 minutes. It is safe and painless as radiation exposure is minimal. Pregnant women should inform the doctor before doing the test.

What are the drawbacks of a bone X-ray?

X-ray images give a very clear view of the bones. However, it does not provide a good visual image of the soft tissues like tendons, muscles or fat tissue under the skin. Even the bone microfractures or complicated spine injuries are not clearly visible on the X Ray images. Apart from this, it also exposes the patient to some amount of radiations but the benefit of the information gained from an X-ray image outweighs the risk of radiations.
