Calcaneus (bone of the heel) LAT view x-ray is part of the two-view calcaneus series. The projection is used to evaluate the calcaneus, talonavicular, talonavicular, and talonavicular joints. A beam of radiation is sent through the heel during the scanning procedure, and all pictures are captured on the screen. If you have significant heel pain, redness, or swelling in your heel, your doctor may order an X-ray of both Calcaneus in lateral view to determine the reason.

X-ray imaging helps determine the cause of pain, or why the pain appears unexpectedly. After the test, the doctor will get an idea and will rule out further treatment. It is also helpful in monitoring the healing of broken bones or finding any infections at the later stage.

What are the drawbacks of a bone X-ray?

X-ray images give a very clear view of the bones. However, it does not provide a good visual image of the soft tissues like tendons, muscles or fat tissue under the skin. Even the bone microfractures or complicated spine injuries are not clearly visible on the X Ray images. Apart from this, it also exposes the patient to some amount of radiations but the benefit of the information gained from an X-ray image outweighs the risk of radiations.

Who interprets the X-ray results?

The interpretation of an X-Ray image is carried out by a radiologist who analyses or reads the X-ray image and prepares a report of the findings which is shared with the patient.
