Rubella Virus Avidity

The Rubella Virus Avidity test is a blood test that measures the strength (avidity) of IgG antibodies against the rubella virus. It helps distinguish between a recent (primary) infection and a past infection or vaccination.

Understanding Rubella Virus Avidity
Rubella, also called German measles or 3-day measles, is a contagious viral infection caused by the rubella virus. It usually causes mild symptoms such as fever, skin rash, headache, stuffy and runny nose, red itchy eyes, and general discomfort. However, it may pose a significant risk to unborn babies whose mothers become infected during pregnancy, and serious birth defects called congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) could develop, especially during the first trimester. Miscarriage and stillbirth are possible consequences for those who are pregnant. Vaccination is the best way to prevent these complications.
The Rubella Virus Avidity test plays an important role in assessing the timing of rubella infection. While a standard rubella IgG test shows whether a person has antibodies against the virus, the avidity test measures how strongly those antibodies bind to the virus. Low-avidity IgG antibodies suggest a recent or primary infection, whereas high-avidity IgG antibodies indicate past infection or immunity from vaccination. This distinction is especially crucial in pregnancy, where knowing whether the infection is recent or old guides medical decisions.
Doctors may recommend this test if a woman tests positive for rubella IgM antibodies during pregnancy, when it is unclear whether the infection is new or old. It may also be advised if routine prenatal screening shows equivocal results or if there is a suspected exposure to rubella. In such cases, the avidity test provides clarity, helping doctors decide the best course of care
No special preparation is needed before taking this test. However, it is important to inform the doctor about any medications being taken or any recent infections, as these can affect results. During the test, details such as the specimen type, collection site, clinical history, and the clinician’s contact number are also required for accurate reporting and notification.
Test result ranges are approximate and may differ slightly between labs depending on the methodology and laboratory guidelines. Do not self-medicate and always consult a doctor to understand the test results correctly.
Please note: This is an outsourced test. The sample for this test is collected by TATA 1MG and processed at a NABL accredited partnered lab.
What does Rubella Virus Avidity measure?
The Rubella Virus Avidity test measures the binding strength, or avidity, of rubella-specific IgG antibodies present in the blood. The level of avidity helps determine whether an infection is recent or occurred in the past. Low-avidity IgG antibodies suggest a recent rubella infection, usually within the last few months, while high-avidity IgG antibodies indicate past infection or immunity acquired through vaccination. By assessing the maturity of these antibodies, the test helps distinguish between a primary infection and long-standing immunity. This information is especially important in pregnant women, as a recent infection may pose serious risks to the developing baby, including congenital rubella syndrome.
