The PML-RARA fusion is a genetic alteration resulting from the fusion of the PML (promyelocytic leukemia) and RARA (retinoic acid receptor alpha) genes. It is a defining feature of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), a subtype of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). This fusion gene plays a critical role in the development of APL and is a target for specific therapies, such as all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) and arsenic trioxide, which have significantly improved the prognosis for APL patients.
