PlGF (Placental Growth Factor), Serum

The PlGF (Placental Growth Factor), Serum is a blood test that measures the level of placental growth factor (PlGF), a protein produced primarily by the placenta during pregnancy. PlGF plays a crucial role in the development of blood vessels that deliver oxygen and nutrients from the mother to the growing baby, making it an important marker of placental health. This test is primarily used to assess placental function and support the evaluation of pregnant women with suspected preeclampsia—a serious pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure and signs of damage to organs such as the kidneys or liver. Low PlGF levels may indicate impaired placental development and are associated with an increased risk of preeclampsia, fetal growth restriction (FGR), and other placental disorders. The PlGF (Placental Growth Factor), Serum is also recommended during the first trimester (11–14 weeks of gestation) as part of combined prenatal screening to help assess the risk of certain fetal chromosomal abnormalities (aneuploidies). However, the results should always be interpreted alongside clinical findings, ultrasound assessments, and other laboratory investigations.
