The Parathyroid Scan is done to determine the function and health of the parathyroid gland. A radioactive liquid material is injected into the body. It is absorbed by an overactive (hyperactive) parathyroid, but not by healthy parathyroids. An overactive (hyperactive) gland that produces excessive hormone is picked up by the scan. The pictures or images are recorded by the camera and are then visually assessed to identify abnormalities.

You may have to remove your jewelry and any metal objects which might interfere with the image.

Pregnant women should inform their doctor (and x-ray technician) as the radiations may affect the fetus. If needed, precautions can be taken to lower the radiation exposure to the fetus.
