Myoglobin, Urine test is used to measure the amount of myoglobin in the urine. It is a protein found in the heart and skeletal muscles that stores oxygen. However, any damage to the muscles results in its release into the bloodstream and it is excreted out of the body by the kidneys. Excess of myoglobin in the blood is toxic for kidneys and hence can lead to kidney damage as well. This test is used for the diagnosis of muscular dystrophy, rhabdomyolysis, kidney failure, and myositis. It is also recommended along with other cardiac markers for the confirmation of myocardial infarction.
