Understanding GBM Antibody (Glomerular Basement Membrane)
What is GBM Antibody (Glomerular Basement Membrane)?
The GBM Antibody test is useful in detecting glomerular basement membrane (GBM) antibodies that are associated with Goodpasture's syndrome, a rare autoimmune disease that affects the kidneys and lungs. These antibodies attack the capillaries of the GBM which leads to blood leakage into the urine. The test may also be helpful in the assessment of patients with rapid onset of pulmonary hemorrhage or renal failure. This test may be done when an individual experiences symptoms suggestive of kidney or lung disease such as chest pain, chills and fever, unexplained weight loss, blood in urine, vomiting, coughing up blood, or anemia. Understanding the levels of GBM antibodies helps in diagnosing and managing this condition.
What is GBM Antibody (Glomerular Basement Membrane) used for?
- To diagnose Goodpasture syndrome which shows symptoms like sudden renal failure, glomerulonephritis and pulmonary haemorrhage.
- To detect diseases that affect the kidneys and lungs (anti-GBM disease)
- To evaluate onset of renal failure or pulmonary hemorrhage
