Fibrinogen, also known as Factor I, is a protein made by the liver and released into the blood. It plays a key role in blood clotting. It is converted into fibrin, which forms the mesh that helps stop bleeding after an injury. Adequate fibrinogen levels are necessary for normal clot formation, while abnormal levels can cause excessive bleeding or unwanted clotting (thrombosis).
