C-MYC is a proto-oncogene, which means that it has the potential to become an oncogene (a gene that can lead to cancer) when it is altered or overexpressed. C-MYC gene rearrangements are frequently observed in certain types of lymphomas, including Burkitt lymphoma and some cases of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma.
