PCR testing for KIT mutations provides diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive information for systemic mastocytosis (SM), gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST), melanoma, and acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Usually, the presence of a KIT mutation in exon 11 is associated with a more favorable prognosis and a greater likelihood of response to Imatinib therapy in patients with advanced GIST. The presence of a KIT mutation in exon 9 predicts a less likelihood of response and an increased dose should be considered.
