BERA (Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry)

A BAER (brainstem auditory evoked response) test measures your brain’s response to sounds you hear. It is also helpful in detecting nervous system disorders such as multiple sclerosis, a brain tumour, or a brain injury.

You lie on a recliner or a bed. The doctor gives you a set of headphones, attaches some sticky patches with wires (electrodes) to your scalp and earlobes. A machine connected to these electrodes records your brain activities. Then, you hear a series of tunes, and the electrodes record your response to them. Later, doctors examine the test results for any flat lines because they indicate hearing loss. Doctors may mildly sedate children as they may not stay still. There are no associated complications.
