This test is recommended for people who have already been diagnosed with diabetes, to determine its classification.
The test is done by taking blood from a vein in the arm. It detects the presence or absence of islet cell cytoplasmic autoantibody in the blood. Positive results indicate type 1 diabetes. Negative results indicate absence of type 1 diabetes. Healthcare practitioners may suggest a subsequent specific test for confirming type 2 diabetes.
