Overview
What is MR Arotography With Contrast?
MR aortography with contrast i.e. magnetic resonance imaging is a technique used to visualise the blood flow through the carotid artery (arteries which supply oxygenated blood to the head and neck) and intra-cerebral arteries (arteries which supply blood to the cerebrum). Gadolinium (a radio contrast material) is injected into the veins for better visualization of the blood flow through the arteries.
Why is MR Arotography With Contrast done?
- To diagnose vascular diseases of the brain like blockage in blood flow of the arteries which carries blood to the brain
- To detect ischemic stroke (shortage of blood flow to the brain) and brain / spinal hemorrhage
- To find out hematoma (accumulation of the blood behind the brain) and CVST (cerebral venous sinus thrombosis) where blood clot in the sinuses which drains from the brain.
- To evaluate vascular malformation (includes congenital vascular abnormalities of only veins, lymph vessels, both veins and lymph vessels, or both arteries and veins
