Overview
What is Bilirubin Direct?
The test measures the level of direct (conjugated) bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is a substance that is formed as a result of breakdown of red blood cells, which is a normal process. Direct bilirubin is formed in the liver for the excretion. High levels of bilirubin in the blood indicates liver disease. You may need this test if you have jaundice, dark yellow colored urine, light gray colored stools, nausea, vomiting, severe tiredness, and abdominal pain. It can be a sign of hepatitis, gallstones and inflammation of the bile duct.
