Atorec-ASP Capsule

Overview

Introduction

Atorec-ASP Capsule is a combination of two medicines used to prevent heart attack and stroke. It lowers the "bad" cholesterol (LDL), triglycerides and raises the "good" cholesterol (HDL) levels in the body. Moreover, it also decreases the formation of blood clots.

Atorec-ASP Capsule should be taken with food to avoid stomach upset. You should take it regularly at evenly spaced intervals as per the schedule prescribed by your doctor. Taking it at the same time every day will help you remember to take it. The dose and duration of treatment will depend on what you are being treated for. Do not stop taking it until you have finished the complete course, even when you feel better. Lifestyle changes like low-fat diet, exercise and not smoking may help this medicine to work better.

Abdominal pain, indigestion, and constipation are some common side effects of this medicine. This medicine increases your risk of bleeding, so it is important to be careful while shaving, cutting nails, using sharp objects, or engaging in contact sports (e.g., football, wrestling). Let your doctor know if you notice yellowing of skin, muscle pain or dark urine.

Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease or you are suffering from bleeding disorder. You must tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding. You should also let your healthcare team know all other medicines you are taking as they may affect, or be affected by this medicine.

How to cope with side effects?

The occurrence of side effects varies from person to person. The following are a few ways of dealing with some of the common side effects. However, consult your doctor if these persist.

  • Coping with Abdominal pain
In most cases, this is mild enough to be treated at home. Try to rest and relax. Putting a heat pad or covered hot water bottle on your stomach may also help. Having a warm bath or shower can help you relax and relieve the pain. Drink plenty of clear fluids such as water and reduce your intake of coffee, tea, lemon juice or soda. Avoid alcohol and smoking as these can aggravate the pain. Eating slowly and having smaller and more frequent meals can also help. If the pain is severe, speak to your doctor. They may be able to guide you better.
  • Coping with Constipation
Try to eat foods which are high in fiber such as fresh fruits, vegetables and cereals to increase the bulk and consistency of bowel movements. Drink plenty of water or non-alcoholic drinks and stay hydrated to promote healthy digestion. Increasing physical activities such as walking, yoga and regular exercise can also be helpful. If your condition does not improve, you can ask your doctor to prescribe you laxative medicine.
  • Coping with Flatulence
Try eating small and frequent meals. Drink and chew your food slowly. Exercise regularly to improve how your body digests food. Try not to swallow too much air. This can happen when you talk and eat at the same time. Avoid drinking with a straw, chewing gum and smoking as these can also make you swallow air. Try to limit foods that are hard to digest or produce gas (such as fried and fatty foods, cheese, beans, cabbage, onion, whole grains and many others). Avoid drinking alcohol, carbonated soft drinks and fruit juices. If you wear dentures, make sure they fit properly. Some over-the-counter medicines can help. Talk to your doctor about possible medication if your condition does not improve.
  • Coping with Increased liver enzymes
There may be no symptoms, so your doctor should carry out a blood test and give you advice. Some lifestyle changes can bring down levels of liver enzymes. In general, you will need to stop drinking alcohol or limit the amount you drink, lose weight and keep active. Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. Eat a healthy diet. Some particular foods like nuts, fatty fish, coffee, tea, olive oil, sprouts and bananas may be beneficial. Try to control stress as this can make your symptoms worse.
  • Coping with Hepatitis (viral infection of liver)
There are several types of hepatitis. Find out which one you have. There is a vaccination for Hepatitis B. Ask your doctor about this. If you are diagnosed with hepatitis, get plenty of rest, take over-the-counter painkillers if you are in pain, and keep your home cool and well-ventilated. Eat a healthy diet and ask about medicines to stop you from feeling sick if this is a problem. You should avoid drinking alcohol, as it can worsen your condition.

How Atorec-ASP Capsule works

Atorvastatin is a lipid-lowering medication that blocks an enzyme required in the body to make cholesterol. It lowers the "bad" cholesterol (LDL), triglycerides and raises the "good" cholesterol (HDL). Aspirin/Acetylsalicylic acid is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with anti-platelet action.
