Vinpocetine is semisynthetic alkaloid. It has a nootropic (protects nerves and the brain) effect. It inhibits the voltage-dependent neuronal sodium channels, which in turn enhances a chemical messenger (intracellular cGMP levels) in the brain. Thus, increases blood flow within the brain.
