X - Ray Left Ankle AP & LAT Views is a painless and safe imaging technique used to visualize the left ankle bones like tibia and fibula (the lower leg bones). X-ray tests use a small amount of ionizing radiation to produce an image of the bones and soft tissues. Dense structures such as bones appear white, while soft tissues appear dark in color. This test is used to diagnose fractures and dislocations of bones and joints in the ankle region. Other abnormalities like infections and inflammation of joints (arthritis) can also be analyzed using X-rays.

The X-ray test may last for about 20 minutes, though exposure time to X-rays would usually be only a second. X-rays are not usually recommended for pregnant women because of the risk to the developing fetus.

What are the drawbacks of a bone X-ray?

X-ray images give a very clear view of the bones. However, it does not provide a good visual image of the soft tissues like tendons, muscles or fat tissue under the skin. Even the bone microfractures or complicated spine injuries are not clearly visible on the X Ray images. Apart from this, it also exposes the patient to some amount of radiations but the benefit of the information gained from an X-ray image outweighs the risk of radiations.

Who interprets the X-ray results?

The interpretation of an X-Ray image is carried out by a radiologist who analyses or reads the X-ray image and prepares a report of the findings which is shared with the patient.
